I recently went on a family educational experiential camp with my kids which turned out to be an exciting outdoors experience in the heart of Tai Long Wan, in  Sai Kung, Hong Kong.  Not only did I get to appreciate some of Hong Kong’s amazing scenery,  far removed from the concrete jungle that Hong Kong is perhaps more famous for, but my kids also got to connect with nature as well as to experience some amazing watersports for the first time with other kids!

Interest in outdoor activities is booming, combining fitness and heaps of fun!I also got to re-connect with the owner of the provider, Anthony Somerset, of A-Team Edventures, whom I have known for at least 12 years. Anthony is a former lawyer by profession who has headed up the legal departments of ANZ and DBS banks in Hong Kong. He is also an alumni of international law firm, Dentons, as was I!

Originally from New Zealand, Anthony studied law and qualified in the UK before moving to Hong Kong. Throughout his 24 years in Hong Kong, he has enjoyed Hong Kong’s outdoors, with his family and friends. Anthony is a keen trail runner and extremely energetic: he is very hands-on in his experiential education business, which operates in Hong Kong and has expanded into China.  His equally energetic team has provided educational adventure camps to primary and secondary students and also work with adults, including offering Group, Collaboration and Leadership programmes that use outdoor experiential methods to develop better teamwork.

Cooling off in one of Hong Kong's many water pools.

Anthony and the  team are passionate about the environmental and educational aspects of these adventure activities.  I observed the group of kids falling from their paddle boards and off the slack line and enthusiastically getting right back on without any complaints or panic and learning about collaborating and being good team members. A-Team also offer programmes to schools and run a Seakayaking Meet Up group.  What better way to end the day than a relaxing sea kayak journey along the coastline.

From In-House Head of Legal to Outdoorsman and educator

Anthony grew up in East Africa, so its only natural that he has an affinity to and love for nature.  The transition from in-house lawyer to outdoorsman and educator was also a natural transition as Anthony could both pursue his passion and also utilise his legal and team organisational skills in focusing on risk management and safety matters. And building and training effective teams.
